Communication tower is an infrastructure used to set up wireless communication and microwave communication equipment. It provides a platform to support and install communication equipment to enable global communication and information transmission. How to select materials for communication towers to protect against lightning and grounding.
The specific dimensions and materials used in communications tower lightning protection grounding will vary depending on design requirements, soil conditions, and code requirements. Here are some common sizes and materials used in communication tower grounding products:
Selection of ground electrodes: Ground electrodes are usually used to improve the grounding effect in areas with poor soil conditions. Common ground electrode materials can be galvanized ground electrodes or copper-plated ground electrodes. The specific size is determined through geological survey and design requirements. For example, we can choose a galvanized ground electrode with a zinc layer thickness of Ф20*2500 ≥70um.
Selection of ground wire: The ground wire is usually made of copper wire or galvanized round steel. The specific size can be determined according to requirements. Common copper wire sizes can be 10-25 mm in diameter, and galvanized round steel can be 10-16 mm in diameter. For example, we can choose Ф14,6 meters/piece galvanized round steel with a zinc layer thickness of 270um.
It is recommended to use galvanized materials mainly because the material has the following characteristics:
1. Hot-dip galvanizing has the advantages of uniform coating, strong adhesion, and long service life.
2. The hardness of the galvanized layer is greater than that of steel, and its impact resistance and wear resistance are quite good.
3. The consumption of zinc layer in the atmosphere is very slow, about 1/17 to 1/18 of the corrosion rate of steel, and it is predictable. Its lifespan is far longer than any other coating.
4. The coating is dense, durable, maintenance-free and economical, with good adhesion, uniformity and solidity.
Selection of connection methods: Exothermic welding can be used as a connection method in communication tower grounding systems. Exothermic junctions join metals together to form a reliable electrical connection by inducing an exothermic reaction at the junction.
Selection of lightning rods: In addition to ground lightning protection measures, the electrical system of communication towers should also be equipped with appropriate lightning arresters to protect equipment from overvoltage damage. For common lightning arresters, we can choose Ф16*1000mm hot-dip galvanized lightning rods, which are welded on the top of the main tower. It should be noted that the above only provide examples of some common sizes and materials, and the actual design should be based on specific requirements and standards. When conducting lightning protection grounding for communication towers, it is recommended to consult a professional electrical engineer or an expert in the relevant field to ensure that appropriate sizes and materials are selected and comply with regulatory requirements.
